JOEL BAKAN – Keynote Speaker

The Union for Democratic Communications is pleased to host renowned author, filmmaker, and professor Dr. Joel Bakan as the 2012 conference keynote speaker. Dr. Bakan is a Rhodes Scholar who currently works as a law professor and legal scholar at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Bakan authored the critically-acclaimed and internationally-recognized book, The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, which later became an award-winning documentary of the same name. Dr. Bakan has authored other works such as Just Words: Constitutional Rights and Social Wrongs, and recently released Childhood Under Siege: How Big Business Targets Children. Dr. Bakan will speak at FSU’s Turnbull Center at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 11.

JOHN DOWNING – Plenary Address

The Union for Democratic Communications is honored to announce that the 2012 Dallas Smythe Award will be awarded to Dr. John Downing from Southern Illinois University- Carbondale’s College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. Dr. Downing is a Professor Emeritus, and Founding Director of the New Global Media Research Center at Southern Illinois. Dr. Downing studies international communication, alternative media, and social movements, and has authored books such as Radical Media: Rebellious Communication and Social Movements, and edited books such as the comprehensive Encyclopedia of Social Media Movements. Dr. Downing will give a plenary address at FSU’s Turnbull Center at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 12.
